This help document walks through how to install the Secure Browser (also called the Lockdown Browser) on the following student devices: Chromebooks, Windows, Mac OS X, and iOS.

Note: to enable the secure browser on an assignment, go to Assignment Settings, click on Basic Settings, and checkbox Require Secure Browser.

Installing the Secure Browser on Chromebooks

Important - For Chrome OS versions 132.x onwards:

The Kiosk App is being deprecated by Google Chrome. We recommend switching to the Chromebook Extension that offers the same features. (See instructions for admins - Chromebook Extension)

Here’s how a student can access an assignment in the secure browser once the Chrome extension is installed:
  1. Log in to your Chromebook and navigate to the Edcite Student Home.
  2. Open the Secure assignment from your Home Page or your My Assignments Page or by typing in the start code.
  3. If the Secure Browser has been enabled on the assignment, the LockDown Browser Chrome Extension will launch as soon as the assignment is opened.
  4. To exit the assignment, click on 'Return to Home Page' at the top left corner of the assignment.
  5. Click on the "Continue" button to exit the Secure Browser.

Kiosk App: (Through Chrome OS version 131.x):
  1. Go to the 'Apps' on your login screen and select 'Edcite'. (Admins need to enable the Edcite App for students. See instructions for admins - Kiosk App)
Note: the Kiosk app is supported through Chrome OS version 131.x.
  2. When the Edcite App starts, the Edcite login page will appear and you can navigate to the test.
  3. Once you submit the test you must restart the Chromebook (or sign out) to fully exit the test.
