Assignment Settings - Text-to-Speech [Edcite Schools Feature]

By default, students can use the Text-to-Speech feature in any assignment. Below is a guide on how the feature works based on the viewer you are using. To find the viewer that aligns with your state, look at the list of states beside the viewer names.

To turn text to speech OFF for any assessment or part of an assessment:

1. Open the Assignment Editor by going to Assignments, My Assignments on the navigation bar to the left, then clicking on the pencil to the far right of the assignment name. 


2. Click on the Settings Gear at the top right of the page, and then click on Open All Settings.


3.  Under Assignment Settings to the far left, choose the Student Tools Tab, and then use the direction below Disable Text to Speech to disable the Text to Speech you do not want students to have access to. 


  1. Note: Text-to-Speech is available in Spanish. To change language, open the assignment settings by clicking on the Settings Gear, click on Student Tools, and select the relevant language.






Default Edcite Viewer

1. To play questions and answer choices, click on the Play button located on the left side of the page. To stop text being read aloud, press the button again (the triangle changes to a square when actively playing).


2. To play selected text, highlight it first by clicking and dragging your cursor across the text and then press the Listen button. To stop text being read aloud, click on the Stop button.


Note: You also have the option to highlight selected text in a blue or pink color, and the option to remove the colors.




Viewer A (Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, West Virginia, Wyoming)

1. To play a section's text, click on a dropdown menu and then click on Speak Text. This will read all of the text within that section of the question. To pause text being read aloud, click on the Pause Audio button. To resume text being read aloud, click Resume Audio.


2. To play selected text, highlight it first by clicking and dragging your cursor across the text and then press the Speak Selection button. To pause text being read aloud, click on the Pause Audio button. To resume text being read aloud, click Resume Audio.


Note: You also have the option to highlight selected text in a yellow color, remove a highlight, and reset all highlights from a section.




Viewer B (Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Virginia)

1. To play questions and answer choices, click on the Play button located on the left side of the page. To stop text being read aloud, press the button again (the triangle changes to a square when actively playing).


2. To play selected text, highlight it first by clicking and dragging your cursor across the text and then press the Listen button. To stop text being read aloud, click on the Stop button.


Note: You also have the option to highlight selected text in a blue or pink color, and the option to remove the colors.




Viewer C (Mississipi, Missouri (HS), New York, Tennessee, Utah)

1. To play questions and answer choices, click on the Play button located at the top of the page. To stop text being read aloud, press the button again (the triangle changes to a square when actively playing).


2. To play selected text, highlight it first by clicking and dragging your cursor across the text and then press the Play button. To stop text being read aloud, press the button again.


Note: You also have the option to highlight selected text in a yellow color by selecting the text and then pressing Highlighter at the bottom of the page. To remove the color, click on Reset Answer.




Viewer D (Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri (ES/MS), Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Wisconsin)

1. To play questions and answer choices, click on the Play button located at the bottom of the page. To stop text being read aloud, press the button again (the triangle changes to a square when actively playing).


2. To play selected text, highlight it first by clicking and dragging your cursor across the text and then press the Play button. To stop text being read aloud, press the button again.


Note: You also have the option to highlight selected text in a yellow color by selecting the text and then pressing Highlighter at the top of the page. To remove the color, click on Reset Answer.




Viewer E (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington)

1. To play a section's text, click on a dropdown menu and then click on Speak Text. This will read all of the text within that section of the question. To pause text being read aloud, click on the Pause Audio button. To resume text being read aloud, click Resume Audio.


2. To play selected text, highlight it first by clicking and dragging your cursor across the text and then press the Speak Selection button. To pause text being read aloud, click on the Pause Audio button. To resume text being read aloud, click Resume Audio.


Note: You also have the option to highlight selected text in a yellow color, remove a highlight, and reset all highlights from a section.
