Question Type - Fill in the Blanks (#002)

You can create a Fill in the Blanks (#002) question from the Create Question page. If you are familiar with our general question creating process, you can skip ahead to Step 5 and continue from there for information specific to the Fill in the Blanks (#002) question.

1. Name your question in the space provided at the top left of the screen and click the green Save button at the top right of the screen.


2. If desired, add a stimulus to accompany the question in the space provided by clicking the Blue Pencil button and opening your Rich Text Editor. You can add text, audio, video, or images.  Click the OK button upon completion. You can name this tab or you can add a new tab with an alternative stimulus by clicking the (+) button.


3. Enter the instructions and/or prompts in the space provided. If desired, change the Point value for the question in the box to the left of "Point(s)."


4. Tag learning standards to your question by clicking the Tags tab. For more information about Tagging Standards, click here. Click the Show More button to see additional options. If desired, add a Rubric, Settings, Solutions, and Hints. For more information about these options, please click here.


5. Write out the full text of your question or statement in the Student Response Area below the prompt (including the word(s) you want to set as blank(s)). This is done in Edit mode, which is the default starting point.
  1. Note: You can click the Blue Pencil in the student response area for advanced editing (for example, adding a table).


6. On the toggle right below the prompt, toggle to Set Answer mode and highlight the word(s) that you want to become blanks by clicking and dragging your cursor across the word(s).


7. Next, choose how you want students to fill in the blanks. You can choose from Dropdown Answer, Drag and Drop Answer, or Text Answer. You can choose to allow students to re-use answer choices. You can also add alternate answers and distractors for students.
  1. Note: If Text Answer is selected as the answer type, you can choose to make the answers case sensitive.


  1. Note: If you have added distractors to Drag and Drop or Dropdown Answer types and switch to Text Answer type, the distractors will disappear, but will reappear again if you change back to Drag and Drop or Dropdown Answer types.

8. Click on the Settings Gear to the top left of the promp see advanced options for this question type.
  1. Ordering of answer options: You can set the order of answer choices for students to be randomized or alphabetical.
  2. Scoring: By default, this question will be auto graded using Additive without Negation (correct answers are scored with points and distractors are not). If desired, you can make your question teacher graded or you can choose from more advanced scoring options - All or None, Condition Scoring, or Group Scoring.

    1. All or None Scoring: Students will only get a correct answer if they get all answers correct - otherwise the score is zero.
    2. Condition Scoring: Your question will be auto graded based on a set of algebraic conditions (see example below).

    3. Group Scoring: You can organize different answers into groups, with each answer in a group being interchangeable (see example below).

  3. When you are happy with your settings, click Done.
