Why Can't I Unlock My Common Assessment? / What is the Difference Between a White Lock and a Gray Lock? [Edcite Schools Feature]

Common assessments allow other team members to use the same assessment so that data for all students is compiled into one set of reports. Creating a common assessment on Edcite involves two steps: 1) locking the assessment and 2) sharing it into an Edcite Schools folder. If an assessment is locked, it means it cannot be edited. Only the creator of an assessment can unlock a locked common assessment.

A common assessment will have either a white lock or a gray lock next to it. A white lock indicates it is the original version of the common assessment. A gray lock indicates it is a copied version of a common assessment. Note: a locked copy is automatically created when a teacher assigns a common assessment to their students/classes.

A copied common assessment cannot be unlocked (even by its creator) and no changes can be made to it. Any changes made to the original will flow through to any copies made. In the screenshot below, you can see an example of an original common assessment (the white lock) and an example of a copy of a common assessment (the gray lock).

A common question around white and gray locks comes up when teams are creating pre- and post-tests. For best practices here, check out this help document.
